Merkel-Trump photos reveal power play at tense G7


US President Donald Trump's revocation of support for a joint communique with other leaders at the G7 summit was "sobering and a little depressing", German Chancellor Angela Merkel said late Sunday (Jun 10). Photographs from the Group of Seven summit provided by the German and American governments suggest contrasting images of their leaders.

Earlier in the day, the US President Donald trump said that Russian Federation should attend the G7 meeting in Canada, which began on 8 June.

"We all agreed that the return of Russian Federation on the summits of the group of seven will not occur until substantial progress has been made in connection with the Ukrainian problem", she said.

It was a far cry from the official photos the White House had released of Trump's visit to the G7 Summit, which were mostly posed pictures or those that depicted Trump in a serious, commanding light.

The EU has already said it will announce counter-measures against Trump's metals tariffs on Jul 1.
